Comrie - The Big Green Challenge - Comrie

Comrie plans to engage the local community in low carbon activities through their work on the sustainable development of 96 acres of land, and expanding to all aspects of village life enabling the behavioural changes that will result in a reduction in Comrie’s carbon footprint. Activities will include training local tradesmen and architects in eco construction, setting up renewable energy sources for the site and village, and training local school children in food production.

The Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust is planning to make the whole Isle carbon neutral with a range of innovative initiatives including community biodiesel use, using excess heat from island electricity generation to heat community buildings and new recycling schemes for paper and oil.

Assynt Foundation, a Community Development Trust, plans to install a woodchip boiler that will reduce CO2 emissions significantly, replacing oil and electric heating with wood fuel from sustainably grown local sources. The boiler is to have sufficient maximum capacity to heat other buildings and will enable local groups and individuals to switch to sustainably grown local wood fuel.

Tarbet Conservation Initiative’s ‘Carbon Neutral Eco Flat Renovation’ project seeks to renovate homes in the community by insulating the walls with low energy materials and introducing vapour barriers, and to create a community wind turbine farm.
