Climate Change: the citizen’s agenda - report

By Alan Morton on 24 October 2007 | 2 Comments

We went to a meeting organised by PRASEG (the Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group) on the recent report by the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee of the House of Commons Climate Change: the “citizen’s agenda”. Michael Jack, Chair of the Committee, outlined the report and its conclusions.

It’s a great report. It summarises a lot of useful information – such as the breakdown of emissions by UK household. On average each household emitted 20.7 tonnes of CO2 in 2001. Over half of this comes from private cars, direct fuel and electricity use in the home, and aviation and public transport.

It also sets out what more the Government – and Citizens could be doing - from home energy efficiency, (smart metering, low energy lightbulbs, and insulation) to microgeneration and personal carbon allowances.

Do have a look at the report and see what could be done (and what is being done in countries like Germany). Plenty of food for thought for people interested in the Big Green Challenge.

You people simply cannot resist cosmetic tinkering and bluster with the maximum ’splash’ and gallery-gesticulating, and minimal Government Action! Scientist after Scientist has pointed out that CO2 reduction is worthless without attempting a reversal of the decimation of the ancient tropical and other rain forests - principally to satiate the gargantuan appetites of the urban jungles of Western conurbations for the mineral wealth products and irreplaceable natural resources of the virgin territories of the Far East and South America - without tackling the erosion of our sources of atmospheric equilibrium by serving Preservation Orders on All remaining forest regions to enable them to recover from this decimation! This is a World Government issue, and the Powerful Governments are lamentably compromised by their own duplicity when it comes to serving National interest and Profit in preference to any wider perspectives on the consequences of plundering the remaining resources to gratify internal market demands. The World Order must Insist upon the withdrawal of American mining companies from the Far East, Insist upon the cessation of clearances in Indonesia to make way for palm oil exploitation, Insist upon serving Preservation Orders on all Forest Habitats and the forest-dwellers, who have lived sustainably in these habitats for 1,000s of years and are the last defence against the desertification which results from removing the forest canopy and felling these ancient trees. That then could be regarded as making a start. We are so far down the doom-laden road, that drastic reversals are the only options with any impasct.

    Quote by Dick Srawbridge.

The best idea I’ve seen to tackle climate change is…

I’m working with a company that has found a way of capturing CO2 emissions from internal combustion engines, which could mean that soon cars, power stations and any form of motor powered by fossil fuels won’t contribute to climate change.

Why on earth have this team not been helped to facilitate the project forward.
£1m is the prize here, why can’t they have it?

    Puzzled?
